In November 1899 a constructor August Horch established the company Horch & Cie, which, in the years 1901 – 40,  produced cars of the Horch brand. In 1909 he left the company and in July 1909 Horch established a new one – August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH. In April 1910 he changed its name to Audi Automobilwerke GmbH, which, in the years 1910-1941, produced cars of the Audi brand. In 1932 the companies: Audi, DKW (1928 - 42), Wanderer (1905 - 1942) and Horch established the concern Auto Union AG, which, after the war, produced only two brands of cars: DKW (1946-66) and Auto Union (1954-68). In 1958 the company was taken over by Daimler-Benz, which, in turn, in the years 1964 (50.3% on 1 January 1965) - 1966 (100%) resold it to Volkswagen. In September 1965 the production of Audi cars was resumed. In 1969 under, the concern Volkswagen, the company Auto Union Audi was merged with NSU (NSU cars were produced in the years 1905-33 and 1957-77). In 1985 Audi NSU Auto Union AG changed the name to Audi AG. In 1998 AUDI AG and the British engine company Cosworth were taken over by Italian Lamborghini. Audi cars are produced in Germany, Belgium (2004-2005 and since 2007), Hungary (since 1998), in China (since 1988, since May 2006 under the FAW Audi brand), in Brazil (1999-2006) and assembled in Thailand (2000-2003), Ukraine (2004-2005 and since 2007), Bosnia and Herzegovina (since 2004) and India (since 2007).

The production of old models A2 and Allroad Quattro ended in 2005,  in 2006  the production of TT Coupe and Roadster 1st generation was ended, while in 2007 the production of A4/S4/RS4 II and A4/S4/RS4 Avant II was ended. Future plans: 2009 – A1 (production in Belgium), A4 Allroad, A5 Sportback, RS5, A8 3rd generation (D4), TT RS, A5/S5 Cabrio, A7 Coupe, R8 Targa, Q7 Hybrid; 2010 – A3 3rd generation, RS4, Q3 SUV; 2011 – little hatchback City, A1 Roadster (production in Belgium), A6/A6 Avant 4th generation (C7), A7 Cabrio, R4 Coupe, R8 Spyder, Q5 Hybrid; 2012 – Q1 (production in Belgium), A4 restyling, A6 Allroad.
