BMW cars are worldwide recognized as the most luxury and reputable cars that compete with car brands like Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Established in 1917, the company Bayerische Motoren Werke initially produced only aerial motors and in 1923 motorcycles were added. In October 1928 BMW purchased the company Dixi, which as early as in the years 1898-1904 produced Wartburg cars, and in the years 1904-29 Dixi cars. From December 1927 the company Dixi offered, among others, cars with the license of Austin Seven and it was on their base that in 1929 the first BMW models, 3/15 DA1 and 3/15 DA2, were produced. In the years 1946-51 BMW cars were produced in GDR (later as EMW), while in FRG they were presented no sooner than in April 1951, whereas in November 1952 a new model 501 was introduced to production. The BMW concern took over the following companies: Veritas (1953), AFM (1954), Glas (1966), Mini (1994) and Rolls-Royce (2003). From 1994 also the companies Rover, MG and Land Rover belonged to BMW. In 2000 Land Rover was sold to Ford, while Rover MG and – to the British consortium Phoenix. BMW cars are produced in Germany, Austria (since 2003), USA (since 1994), China (since 2003., since 2006 under the Huachen BMW brand), Thailand (since 1973), South Africa (since 1968), Egypt (since 1997), as well as assembled in Mexico (1995 - 2003), Indonesia, Malaysia (since 1981), in the Philippines (1994-2004), in Vietnam (from 1995), India (since 2007) and in Russia (since 1999.). In 2006 ended production of old models 3/M3 Coupe, 3/M3 Cabrio and X5, in 2008 – of old 7 series sedans, in August 2008 in the USA – Z4 Roadster, Z4 Coupe, Z4 M Roadster, Z4 M Coupe. Future plans: 2009 – Z4 Coupe/Roadster 2nd generation (production in Germany),5 Coupe/PAS, SUV X1; 2010 - 5 6th generation, x3 2nd generation (production in the USA); 2011 - 1 2nd generation, 5 Touring 6th generation, new 6 Coupe, CS Coupe; 2012 - 3 7th generation, new M5, new 6 Cabrio; 2013 – 3 Touring/Coupe 7th generation, 3 crossover. BMW together with MINI and Rolls-Royce brands, is a fifteenth largest car manufacturer in the world.
